Here is some information on installing and using GRASS 6.1.  I just installed this on my system and got it to work.  You will need to closely follow the directions to get GRASS to work.  I have provided some links to assist and my comments are provided.  You will need to install the following for Windows (other OSs, your on your own):

  • Cygwin - You need this to donwload and install GRASS.  This is an X-term emulator that is similar to Unix (Linux).  You will also use this to do updates for both the Cygwin installer and future releases of GRASS.  See link below for installing Cygwin and GRASS using the Cygwin Installer.

  • GRASS - This is the website that will provide a link to the Cygwin installer and directions for the "Easy Installation" of Grass.  Follow the screenshots and instructions for intall.  Pay very close attention to these instructions.  It is critical.

It is possible that the download and intall may break during the download/install process.  Attempt to continue from where it left off.  This happend to me on both of my installs (home and work).

Once GRASS is installed and you are ready to set up a project, the next critical step is to create a project and assign the correct coordinate system.  This is also tricky.  Below are the Projection codes needed for different coordinate systems for North Central California.

GRASS Tutorial - This is one tutorial that will go through the structure of GRASS and how to use some of the basic functions.  Reading through this is a must for those new to GRASS.
