My project on Urban Forest Mapping in Sacramento was highlighted in the Overwatch May Newsletter. Check it out!

Check out some sample maps and more information for the work I did on this project under the Skillset--Remote Sensing Section.

05.06.2009    Jet Propulsion Laboratory Open House 2009

I just returned from the JPL Open House. It was very cool. They are doing so many things related to remote sensing. Even the stuff they are doing for extra terrestrial endeavors benefits the Earth observation work. JPL has an entire branch devoted to Earth monitoring. Here is a slide show I put together from some pictures I took while I was there. Enjoy!

I just created an Urban Forest Canopy Draft layer for downtown Sacramento. I worked on this to develop content and lab material for my Remote Sensing class. I used Visual Learning Systems' Feature Analyst 4.2 for ArcGIS. Check out some sample maps and more information under the Skillset--Remote Sensing Section.

Updated Skillset--Application Development to show examples of current and past applications I have developed using VBA, Python, Image Processing, ArcIMS, and Google Hacks.

01.24.2009

Check out the Winter 2009 issue of ArcUser with an article I wrote regarding my work at the City using enterprise GIS using SDE, replication, and high end GPS for Asset Management.

07.16.2008

I have added 3 new maps in the Cartography that I created from a 1854 scanned image of Sacramento and the 1950 American River flood.

I also added a Tutorials Section with Operations manuals and software guides I have created for classes I teach. PDFs of the manuals are available.

I have added links to Presentations I have given.

05.24.2008

I have added a Student Projects Section to my site. I will highlight student projects from my classes and internships.

02.24.2008

I have added a Geospatial Business Integration Solutions Section to my website outlining some integration solutions I developed for the City of Sacramento.

I have updated the Free Data link with some City and County GIS Data Download pages.

I have also added back the link to my blog AllThingsGeography since I have begun to make some updates to the blog as well.

12.23.2007

Now that the semester is over and I am off work for a couple of weeks, I can review my site and update some content.  I have added a section on Yellowstone that I hope to build out showing links and content to Yellowstone resources.

I also plan to build out some of my sections in Flash Movies and Remote Sensing.

11.15.2007

I have added a couple of filtering routines to my Skillset-->Application Development Section.  I have managed to figure out how to incorporate GDAL and Numeric/Numpy processing to my image processing application.  I have not updated the application itself, but I do have the basic image processing structure of reading/writing images and some basic image processing using filter kernels.

09.30.2007

I have added a Flash Movie Section where I will place Flash demos of software and concepts.  Check this link often for updates.

06.12.2007

I have added some "Python" links to Links-->Appliation Developement that are related to my image processing software endeavor.

I have also added a link to the Jobs--> Local/Regional to include a link to the American River College GIS Jobs Posting.

Still plugging away at the Image Processing Application.

Pictometry

I am working on batch processing Pictometry Orthos into SDE for the City of Sacramento.  More than 10,500 files just for the city; regionwide we have over 30,000 files to process--close to 100 Gb.

Image Processing Software Development

I have also been looking into other alternatives for my "low cost" supplemental software package for remotely sensed imagery.  One promising software is TerraLook developed by USGS for educational purposes.  Q GIS also is a possibility with it's latest release 0.8.  It will install GRASS and offer some of the GRASS functionality if the plug-ins are loaded.  You are able to run GRASS commands from a built in GRASS shell.

03.08.2007

I am working on an Image Processing Shell and subroutines for my remote sensing class.  It is entirely written in Python.  I am using the (wxPython) modules to develop the GUI App and the PIL ("Python" Image Library).  Check the Links--Application Development section for more information.

Scripting

I have added a sample to my Skillset--Application Development section.  I will post code when I have it functional and documented.  Check back often for various samples (Python, VBA, JavaScript).

KML

I have also added a Google Map that uses a KML file derived from a GIS file.  Through this investigation, I have found that there are some limitations to KML, GPolygon (a Google construct), and labeling.  One can create such a link on their respective page that then draws up a Google Map with the labeling and a legend in the Google Maps own website.  From the documentation I have read, more functionality to custom built Google Maps within one's own website is coming.  You will find my own rendition of this at Skillset--Application Development

Pictometry Data for Sacramento, Now Online!!

Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) of which the City of Sacramento participates in had Pictometry Imagery (6 in, obliques) collected earlier in the year.  It is now out on Microsoft's Virtual Earth.  (The data for the region looks a little better).  Check out the link below to see Sacramento.  (This link only works in Internet Explorer).

I have added a few more images to my little image randomizer.  You will see some excerpts from the 2' DEM I created for the City of Sacramento.  PDFs are also available under Cartography.  I have 2 versions letter and E Size (34x44) in two color schemes.  I like the Blue, Red, Yellow combination the best.  The City put it up for a GIS Day celebration at City Hall and winners of some GeoQuizes were awarded it after it was signed by the mayor.

Just about finished with my Remote Sensing Class.  It was a lot of work preparing for it now that I have Imagine running.  I will be working on my next endeavor which will be preparing for my Intermediate Programming class and Python.  I will also try and improve my Accuracy Assessment Program a little to so I can put it out.

I have also added links to the books I teach from, since my students can find them easy and are usually cheaper through Amazon.

I figured out to add a 'favicon' file and designed on for this site in 'The GIMP'.  This is another learning curve I will have to surmount at some point.

Between semesters and some time off, I hope to do some more significant updates to my site.  I was having some issues with my content management system, but for now I seem to be able to add content with little problem.

Also, if anyone has any links and information for Graduate Programs in GeoSpatial Information and Technology, drop me a line so I can add it to my resources (nate@deltateck.com).

Cheers,

NJ

11.19.2006

I have not been able to add content for a while, but I did manage to add a site stat using Google Earth from EvoStats. Check out their site if you want more information.

I have also been working on my Accuracy Assessment Program. I released an alpha version to my students, but it still needs some more work. I hope to have a DLL out at the beginning of the year.

I am also picking up a new Intermmediate GIS Programming class for the spring which will use VB and Python. I hope to have some samples up next year as well as some of the student projects.

Thanks for visting.

Resume

My main Resume Link shows markers of all of the locations I have either worked or worked on projects.  Click on the marker to see the name.  I hope to add zoom to capability when the user clicks on these markers.  I added Landsat boundaries of scenes I have classified.  Not all of them are added, yet, but will.

Free Data

I have added a Free Data link to download various sorts of data.  Geogratis is a good place for Free Canadian Data

Geo Google

I have added a link for Geo Google related stuff.  Google just came out with their latest version (mid June - v. 4 Beta) of Google Earth.  Check it out.

Also, since Google bought out Sketch Up, you can now add some "real-like" rendering to 3D objects.  Free download available.
